Develop a Culturally Specific Model of Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Romania, Phase I

Purpose
The program aimed to develop a model for constructive conflict management by third-party consultation, based on the specific background of the subject concerned.
Activities
This project comprised two modules: a training module and an assistance module.
The training module included the following activities:
- Identifying the existing theoretical knowledge on conflict management and related concepts in Romania;
- Identifying the perception of conflict and potential impact of related theory on Romanian society;
- Researching on patterns how Romanians react in a conflicting situation;
- Exploring the possibility to implement western methods of conflict resolution to the culturally specific model of Romania
The assistance module contains the following activities:
- Offering to public administration officials a model of strategic planning in which all the involved members could participate
- Identifying specific methods for improving communication between the members and the departments of a public administration institution (mayor, deputy mayor, heads of services, heads of bureaus etc.)
Training Results
- The 1st seminar in Romania on “Conflict Resolution - Alternative Solutions”, organised in Sinaia, March 1997
- A study regarding methods used for conflict resolution in Romania (study cases in Bucuresti, Pitesti, Slobozia, Cluj , Harghita County and Covasna County) conducted by Marius Lazar and Istvan Horvath, lectors from Babes-Boliyai University, Department of Sociology, in 1997
- Awareness raised among non-governmental organisations (especially active in education and inter-ethnic relations field), trade unions, professional associations (teachers, lawyers, journalists etc.), political parties, Parliament, local administration institutions, Governmental Agencies
Assistance Results
- Case study “Improving Communication among Decision-Makers inside a local public institution”, comprising the results of the facilitation process for which the FDC team provided assistance at the District 6 Town Hall - Bucharest, 20th – 25th February, 1997
